The Folio Society To Publish DC: Batman

In a celebration of the 85th anniversary of Batman’s first comic book appearance, The Folio Society, in collaboration with DC, proudly announces the release of DC: Batman. This collectible compilation, curated and introduced by former DC President Jennette Kahn, encapsulates the essence of the Dark Knight Detective through twelve seminal comics alongside a replica copy of Batman #1.

Batman, created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, emerged from the pages of Detective Comics #27 in 1939 and has since transcended generations as a symbol of determination, courage, and justice. Unlike traditional superheroes, Batman relies on his intellect, unwavering determination, and technological prowess to combat crime in Gotham City.

The deluxe 320-page book features an array of iconic writers and artists, including Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Jerry Robinson, Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams, Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Kelley Jones. Jennette Kahn, the first woman to helm DC Comics, provides insightful introductions to each comic, shedding light on Batman’s evolution and the psychological depths of his adversaries.

One of the highlights of DC:

Batman is including a replica copy of Batman #1, scanned from an original 1940 edition. This historic comic introduces readers to iconic characters such as The Joker and Catwoman, setting the stage for Batman’s enduring legacy.

“The stories selected for DC: Batman reveals how the character and his billionaire alter-ego Bruce Wayne gradually evolved from the dutiful crimefighter of the 1940s to a man possessed,” remarks James Rose, Head of Editorial at The Folio Society. From the Weimar cinema-inspired Joker to the complex persona of Ra’s al Ghul, Batman’s rogues’ gallery reflects his world’s Gothic horror and psychological depth.

Jennette Kahn explores the theme of trauma as a central aspect of Batman’s mythology, noting how it shapes both his adversaries and his psyche. Throughout her 27-year tenure at DC Comics, Kahn was pivotal in elevating the medium to a sophisticated art form, leaving an indelible mark on comic book history.

Among the standout comics featured in DC: Batman is Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” a seminal work that redefined the graphic medium with its cinematic storytelling and literary depth, and Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke,” a haunting exploration of Batman’s complex relationship with The Joker.

The meticulous production standards of The Folio Society are evident in every aspect of DC: Batman. Scanned from original copies held in the DC archives, the comics are reproduced in a lavish 10″ x 7″ treasury format. The anti-scratch laminated hardcover, adorned with Batman’s signature silhouette, is housed in a pitch-black slipcase bearing the iconic Bat Signal.

“DC: Batman is an unmissable investigation into the adventures and pathology of one of the world’s most famous – and most troubled – DC Super Heroes,” remarks Tom Walker, Publishing Director at The Folio Society. The release of DC: Batman follows the success of the acclaimed DC: The Golden Age, marking another milestone in the ongoing partnership between The Folio Society and DC Comics.

DC: Batman will be available exclusively from The Folio Society website on February 20, 2024, priced at £65 / US $100. With its rich storytelling, stunning artwork, and meticulous craftsmanship, DC: Batman promises to captivate fans, old and new, offering a timeless tribute to the enduring legacy of the Dark Knight Detective.
